15th June 2026 - 16th June 2026Across Australia, place-based initiatives tell us a consistent story: meaningful change is happening locally, but there is no shared or consistent way to define, measure or explain that impact. Different funders ask for different evidence. Different frameworks pull in different directions. Too much time is spent translating work into multiple reporting languages instead of focusing on delivery.
On 15–16 June 2026, PLACE hosted its inaugural Place-based Impact Summit, bringing together around 300 people working in and alongside place-based initiatives from across Australia.
The Summit was the start of a conversation on how we demonstrate the value of place based-change. It was clear while all PBIs are unique, many face similar hurdles in capturing that ‘missing middle’ between outputs and population change.

This is a small artefact of the immense energy and contributions over 300 participants made, across two jam-packed days. We hope you enjoy the insights captured and share them with your colleagues.
Since the Summit, we’ve been reflecting on the conversations, ideas and insights that emerged, and considering how best to build on them. One thing has become clear: what continues to grow is the energy and enthusiasm generated through the Summit to keep exploring how we better understand, evidence and communicate the value of place-based work.
As part of the next steps, PLACE will create opportunities to continue that exploration, bringing communities, practitioners, researchers, governments and funders together to learn from one another, test ideas, and build a stronger shared understanding of how we evidence the value of place-based work.
