Place in Practice is a free, monthly one hour online series for people working in place-based change across Australia. Hosted by the PLACE team, each session offers a deep dive into a featured PLACE resource, opportunities to connect with other changemakers, share experiences from practice and hear what’s coming up next from PLACE. It’s a practical space for learning and connection.

PiP May session: Maintaining momentum with volunteering

Our May Place in Practice session will focus on volunteering in place-based work. The session lines up with National Volunteer Week 2026, which this year centres on the theme “Your Year to Volunteer”.

You’ll hear from Sarah Marlor, Employment Pathways Lead, and Jane Anderson, Director, Enable, who will explore the different ways people contribute to place-based change, including the relational and informal work that helps communities stay connected and maintain momentum.

We’ll also introduce a set of PLACE volunteering tools developed to support volunteers working in place-based contexts and help organisations think differently about participation and contribution.

Registrations are open now.

PiP April Session

In our April PiP session, we explored the value of data in place-based change. Data helps communities understand what’s happening, track progress, and make informed decisions. Drawing on PLACE’s learning in the lead‑up to the Impact Summit, the session shared what we’re seeing and invited conversation about what’s needed to support your work.

PiP March session: Community-governed structures

In March we focused on how community voice can be strengthened within place-based governance so that local people can shape decisions and achieve better outcomes.

We were joined by Andrew Davitt, Director of Collaborative Solutions, alongside breakout discussions with participants. Together, we explored how community-governed structures are emerging across Australia and what it takes to support them in practice.

PiP February Session

How do we recognise, respect and genuinely value local knowledge in place‑based work?

Building on feedback from Session 1, this PiP session explored what valuing local knowledge and context looks like in practice. We shared and compared different place‑based approaches, focusing on how community expertise is being centred to shape decisions and solutions.

Rewatch the conversation to hear practical lessons on how to support communities to lead with their knowledge.

PiP January Session

Our first session was hosted by Eve Millar Director, Data, Evidence and Practice with the PLACE team. We were joined by over 160 people from across Australia to deep dive into The 12 Elements - PLACE’s framework for place-based change.
