On 31 July,Partnerships for Local Action and Community Empowerment (PLACE) formally submitted responses to two major Australian Government consultations: Employment Services Reform and the Second Action Plan (National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022-2032).
Our submissions identified opportunities to embed place-based approaches, and the shifts in system settings needed to better support this way of working:
The Employment Services Reform submission highlighted the need to address structural challenges that create unnecessary barriers for participants. It outlined an approach to delivering a place-based Stream 3 that supports individuals and responds to hyper-local drivers of unemployment.
The Second National Plan (National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children) submission highlighted the role of place-based approaches in family and domestic violence prevention, including in shifting local norms, and the importance of locally responsive crisis services in keeping women and children safe.
Across both submissions, our view is clear. Complex issues require local solutions that are backed by the right system settings and a commitment to learning over time. Communities are not peripheral to this work.
These submissions bring place-based perspectives directly to federal policymakers and reinforce our commitment to building a ‘new normal’ – where policy settings actively support community-led decision-making.
