Our work strengthens both people and systems

We enable communities to “grow their own” workforce within a clear national framework, ensuring people have the skills, structures and support required to deliver place-based outcomes.

Place-based work depends on local leaders, volunteers and staff, but many roles are short-term, under supported and disconnected from wider systems. Without consistent support or access to tailored learning, communities struggle to attract and sustain the workforce needed for lasting change.

PLACE is working with communities and partners to develop and implement a national workforce strategy for place-based change.

We’re mapping existing strengths and gaps, co-designing practical solutions and testing scalable models from local mentoring and micro-credentials to system-level improvements in training, coordination and recognition.

These resources support policymakers, workforce planners and community leaders to strengthen place-based initiatives by addressing fragmented planning, invisible roles and unstable investment.

Communities then benefit from a connected and capable local workforce, supported by systems that recognise and enable the vital roles required for long-term, community-led change.

We are releasing a national workforce strategy in 2026, as well as a range of practical resources focused on key workforce skills and volunteer development. Together, these will enable resilient communities and systems for place-based change.
